OpenAI boss Sam Altman thinks people should have more faith in his company and others like it to do the right thing when it comes to artificial intelligence (AI) development amid rising public concerns about all the risks. The world should trust that we are going to do the right thing because it's the right thing and we feel the magnitude of this, Altman said on Tuesday during a conference in San Francisco. However, Altman noted that people were justified in their fears around AI, as the capability of the tools has progressed rapidly. It doesn't take as much imagination as it used to for [us] to imagine how this could go wrong, he said.

The UK government is in discussions about joining a global investment bank, aimed at raising more money for defence spending. Chancellor John Healey is considering a bid to join the Defence, Security and Resilience Bank (DSRB), not long after his predecessor Rachel Reeves rejected the idea. Canada has been leading efforts to establish the bank, which supporters say would enable governments to borrow at lower costs to increase military spending. Treasury officials stressed that no decision has been made. A government spokesperson said it was fully committed to working alongside our international partners to scale defence industrial capacity.

The number of complaints made by households about water companies to the industry watchdog has risen by a record 84% in a year, driven by customer concern and confusion over rising bills. The Consumer Council for Water (CCW) said the year-on-year increase was the highest in its 20-year history and showed just how dissatisfied many people were. Water customers in England and Wales have been hit with steep price hikes in recent years. The regulator Ofwat has also allowed firms to put up bills by 36% between 2025 and 2030 . Water UK, which represents firms, said it understood that higher bills was never welcome, but the money was needed to fund vital upgrades.

US government borrowing costs climbed to their highest level since 2007 after a jump in oil prices further fuelled concerns about inflation. The effective interest rate on US government bonds over 10 years, known as the 10-year Treasury yield, rose as high as 5.04% but has eased back since. Government bond yields have been rising globally for months, driven by worries that inflation caused by the oil price surge since the start of the US-Israel war with Iran will lead to higher interest rates. The US has been buying back bonds back in a bid to drive the Treasury yield down, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent calling the intervention successful. The global benchmark wholesale oil price rose to over $109 a barrel on Tuesday, up from around $86 at the end of August, after renewed concerns about Saudi Arabia's ability to export oil following rising tensions in the region .

Another Metropolitan Police officer has been dismissed following BBC Panorama's undercover investigation into the force's Charing Cross station. PC Mason O'Connor was sacked after a hearing found he had breached standards of professional behaviour, relating to a comment he made to a female colleague, the Met said. O'Connor was reported to a proactive wider investigation following the broadcast of the programme in October 2025 and he has become the 13th officer to be sacked since then, the force added. Other officers who were covertly filmed for the documentary were seen calling for immigrants to be shot, boasting about excessive use of force and joking about rape and sexual assault. O'Connor's dismissal relates to a comment he is alleged to have made to a female colleague while off-duty in a pub in October 2024.

Denmark has accused a Russian warship of firing two emergency flares at one of its helicopters while it was tracking the vessel in the Baltic Sea. The Danish government has summoned the Russian ambassador over the incident, which it said happened during a routine monitoring operation on Monday. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen branded the Russian action reckless and said it was designed to intimidate and divide. Moscow has not commented on the incident. It came on the same day Nato forces shot down a drone over Lithuania in the latest security scare on the alliance's eastern flank, where tensions remain high during Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

A cross-party group of MPs and peers has identified human rights risks posed by artificial intelligence (AI) which existing laws, they argue, are ill-equipped to cover. The Joint Committee on Human Rights (JCHR) published a report calling for a new bill on AI to address the scale and seriousness of such threats. Nowhere in the world, including the UK, has a current legislative and regulatory approach to AI that is fit for purpose, said Alex Sobel MP, the committee's chair. On Saturday, the head of the US AI company Anthropic, Dario Amodei, proposed a plan that includes global regulation, industry-wide regulation and independent monitoring of AI models as they are developed. Amodei urged the pace of development to be slowed down and the bosses of two rival AI firms, Sam Altman of OpenAI and Elon Musk, said they agreed with him.

E-commerce giant Amazon says it is suspending work with the firm that operated a cargo plane that was involved in a fatal crash in Miami this month . After the tragic incident last weekend, we've spent time supporting the investigation and reviewing some of the surrounding circumstances, and we've decided to pause our operations with 21 Air, an Amazon spokesperson said on Sunday. On 6 September, the 21 Air-operated Boeing jet overshot a runway at Miami International Airport and hit several vehicles, killing five people. The BBC has contacted 21 Air for comment. The firm previously said it was devastated by the accident and that it is cooperating with authorities to investigate the incident.
